Ampicillin
Overview
Ampicillin is a penicillin-class antibiotic that works broadly to treat several infections caused by bacteria. Ampicillin is a prescription drug that requires a doctor's prescription.
Indications
Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that works by damaging the bacterial cell wall, thus inhibiting bacterial growth. This medication can only treat bacterial infections and is not effective for treating viral infections, such as colds or the flu.
Ampicillin is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including ear infections, bladder infections, genital infections (gonorrhea), digestive tract infections, meningitis, endocarditis (infection of the inner lining of the heart), respiratory tract infections (pneumonia), and blood poisoning (sepsis). Ampicillin may also be prescribed for other infections based on a doctor's recommendation.
Directions
Ampicillin is available in various forms, such as tablets, caplets, capsules, dry syrup, and injection powder. The injectable form of ampicillin should only be administered by a doctor or other healthcare professional.
If you receive a prescription for ampicillin in tablet, caplet, or capsule form, the medication should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing.
If you are prescribed ampicillin dry syrup, the medication must first be dissolved with a specified amount of water, as instructed and shaken before drinking to ensure the medication is mixed thoroughly. Use the provided measuring spoon to take the correct dose as directed by your doctor. Do not use a regular spoon or other utensils.
Ampicillin should be taken on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. To achieve optimal therapeutic effects, it is recommended to take the medication at the same time every day.
Follow the dosing instructions exactly as indicated on the prescription label. If you find the instructions unclear, ask your doctor or pharmacist for further clarification. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Continue taking ampicillin even if you feel better. Ampicillin must be taken consistently until the prescribed amount is finished. Stopping the medication abruptly may lead to antibiotic resistance or reduced effectiveness in killing bacteria.
If you miss a dose, take ampicillin as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose under any circumstances.
Precautions
Before using ampicillin, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have a history of allergies to ampicillin or other penicillin-class antibiotics, such as amoxicillin, penicillin, etc.
